One of my most exciting and rewarding projects.
I made the first prototype of this chair in 1993. It was beautiful, but extremely uncomfortable., as though the chair wanted to spit you out of the seat. I made another prototype two years later. This one was better, but still not fun to sit in. I put the tall chair aside until 2009. More prototypes and it finally worked. Very comfortable with cushy back support.
A furniture show was coming up and the theme was “collaboration”. Each furniture maker were picked an artist to work with on a project. My good friend Larry Thomas agreed and his spectacular work is seen here on the surface of the chairs. Several close observers thought the work was inlay. Larry’s talent is amazing.
These photos show before and after artistry. A true ekphrasis.
